La Vie En Rose: Marion Cotillard is a mesmerizing, brilliant Edith Piaf
Film Review by Oscar E Moore from the rear mezzanine for Talk Entertainment.com
“What is with these people?” and I quote Jerry Seinfeld at the Cannes Film Festival promoting his Bee animated movie. “Who pays?” And I quote the person who has made millions with the sitcom about nothing Seinfeld. Do I have to elaborate? OK I will. I have just seen a preview of La Vie En Rose – a brilliant albeit much too long French film/bio of Edith Piaf, directed by Olivier Dahan and written by Isabelle Sobelman.
I am now going to quote Piaf. “The Americans are too dumb. They do not understand me. And I do not understand them.” So will this most intriguing, most creative film make money in the land of Spiderman, Shrek and Seinfeld? I hope so but I am wary. All I can say is GO! You will witness the most amazing screen performance ever. Marion Cotillard is a mesmerizing, brilliant Edith Piaf. She is Piaf. One moment a ravishing star, the next a drugged out pathetic waste. The director has chosen not to follow her story in chronological order but instead jumps back and forth between lost soul, and huge star, with one man and then another, youth and old age, in sickness and in health, radiant and depressed in a sometimes confusing but always interesting manner. Her lip syncing of the legendary songs of Piaf is perfection.
Her supporting players are all spellbinding. Sylvie Testud, as Piaf’s life long friend, Momone, shows what it took to be that life long friend - taking the good with the bad and remaining always at her side – no matter what. And there were plenty of reasons to leave. Gerard Depardieu is wonderful as Louis Leplee – who helped jump start her career. And as Piaf’s truest and greatest love Marcel Cerdan – Jean Pierre Martins sizzles on screen with sexual allure. They are the perfect love birds together. Their happiness is palpable.
The final scenes are incredibly moving and emotional. Piaf singing “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” (I Regret Nothing) is sensational. She didn’t regret a thing about her life – no matter how difficult or turbulent or deliriously happy it was. See La Vie En Rose and you will understand why. www.edithpiafmovie.com
