Grammy winner Julie Gold at The Duplex: wonderful

Oscar E Moore from the rear mezzanine for Talk Entertainment

There are certain moments in ones life that arrive in a completely unexpected, wonderful and surprising way. Friday night at The Duplex with Julie Gold was one such moment.

As she sat at the piano in the upstairs room at The Duplex with a room full of friends and fans packed in like sardines, thanking us all for trekking out in the terrible rain storm and confessing that her nerves were as frazzled as her hair she somehow calmed down and performed brilliantly with the able assistance of her two back up singers Emily Bindiger and Margaret Dorn.

Her songs are anthems of hope. No matter what happens to us personally or to our environment Julie Gold finds the good in it all – and sings with a passionate spirit that makes us all feel right again. No need to apologize to your friends for them having to pay, Julie – you are worth it. After a while she was at home. Really at home. She lives and writes in the neighborhood of the West Village. And she is very funny. In a very natural way. She plays and sings with abandon, songs she has written – stories she has written and set to music - in the most charming and welcoming way. I suppose I’m her newest fan.

Eighteen years ago she wrote “From A Distance”. It won her a Grammy. Its huge success has made her life and her cat’s life much more comfortable. She does her shows now at 7 o’clock. Doesn’t take a drink before or during. Then can party with her friends afterwards and go home to her happy cat. Now I have to be honest. I was never a devotee of “From A Distance.” I suppose I never really “ listened” to it. Well, let me tell you that after hearing Julie Gold sing it, the song took on an entire new meaning for me. It’s beautiful.

Anyone and everyone who needs help in being hopeful in the face of adversity and who cares about others and how we relate to one another and who loves to laugh and be entertained will love this show.

As her first guest, she invited Julie Halston to do part of her stand up comedy routine. Where have I been? Not knowing of this hysterically funny woman whose observations about Los Angeles and the sun and time on her hands and plastic surgery had me in stitches. Now I feel like I’m on QVC hawking first this show and then a book written by Julie Halston – Monologues for Show Offs. But she did one of the monologues and she and it were a riot. So see the show and buy the book.

Another friend in the audience was Carol Hall. It just so happens that I was sent a copy of her newest CD – HALLWAYS - to review this week. I had listened to it so I introduced myself and told her how much I liked it but that I didn’t think I could write an entire review and so here is my opportunity to tell you that the CD is wonderful and comforting. In fact, it’s my new security blanket. Carol Hall writes about life with an honest, ever hopeful and funny demeanor. She will be Julie Gold’s guest at The Duplex in the near future. That should be something else! Don’t miss it. Nor one of her other monthly gigs through June.
